Joy spent seven years as one of my tenant-clients before she moved into assisted living. Here’s a very kind note from her son:

Hello John,

I want to take a moment to extend a personal thank you for all the kindness and attention that you afforded my mother for the several years (was it maybe eight?) that she lived in one of your apartments at Stonegate in Weston. As you well know, she loved that apartment and all the care and attention that you so generously, and not infrequently, lavished on her… Alas, at age 94, she finally needed assisted living.

But back to you: I personally always found you to be inordinately attentive to her, and with any little thing she needed, there you were: the banister for the steps down to the garden, a new oven, a new refrigerator, help with the heating system…and some of things you offered she didn’t even want but you felt it would be better if she had the more up-to-date appliances.

Who ever heard of a landlord that is so “pro-active” and who spends such time “paying it forward?” You were always both caring and careful with her as a tenant, a Johnny-on-the-spot if the weather became inclement…did she have what she needed, how could you be helpful?

I guess what I am saying is that even though she has only been out of her apartment for two weeks, she misses it tremendously and how it felt to be there, and how YOU made her feel just being there.

I know that our paths might cross again, but perhaps not, yet I want you to know from her, and from all of us in the family, that we appreciate all that you did for her: always your availability, your kindness and generosity of spirit, your good humor, and your gentle manner with an elderly lady.
